Co-founder of Indios Huichol, Rutury Temay is a Mara’akame, or medicine person, from the Huichol tribe in the Sierra Madra Mountains in Mexico. He comes from a highly regarded lineage of medicine people who taught him the traditional ways from the time he was born, including his father, grandfather and dear sister Jaichima.
Jaichima, a Wixarika (Huichol) Mara'akame, was highly revered in her Huichol community for having reached a level of accomplishment as a woman Elder and healer. She spoke fluent Spanish and English, her native Huichol, and other indigenous languages as well. She was born into a lineage of healers and was guided by her father, Haka’ula, and her godfather, Ulu’temay. She learned through many years of study about the traditional spiritual and physical healing methods of her people.
The definition of her Wixarika name truly spoke about her path in life. Jaichima means ‘One who is in harmony with spirits and physical energies, and guides you with great honor and dignity to enter into another dimension’. Her love touched all levels of life, and she devoted herself to helping the human tribe. She was also absolutely serious about her work and her intention, and there was nothing that could distract her from being completely focused on her task.
It was not always an easy path working with her, she could at times be frank in ways that people were not comfortable with, but for those who chose to look honestly at their challenges, she helped them tremendously with the issues they wanted to shift. She dedicated herself to helping those who wanted to help themselves. She had a challenging life herself, and she knew what it felt like to work with struggles and illness.
Jaichima was a healer, a sister, a daughter, a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a great grandmother, and a mentor. She lived most of her life in Arizona and traveled back and forth to her tribal lands and was a bridge between cultures. She mentored her brother Rutury and they lived and worked together with a profound bond and love, sharing a deep commitment to each other, their work as medicine people, and to their culture.
For 40 years Jaichima and her brother Rutury worked together, facilitating workshops and pilgrimages, individual healing, spiritual guidance, hospice ceremonies and other services for many people in the US and Mexico. While Jaichima made her transition from this world on July 17, 2012, Rutury continues to receive her spiritual guidance and is honored to be carrying on her legacy and sharing her wisdom.
Since then, Rutury has been involved in numerous Native American gatherings and summits, and has worked with tribal people from all over the world. He is fluent in English, Spanish and, of course, the native language of his people, the Wixarika, as they prefer to be called. He has been guided by the Elders of his community to represent his people in the wider world. He has been given rare permission to share his authentic and profound wisdom and knowledge of their ways of healing, and the precious ceremonies that have been passed down to him over the course of his lifetime. He is deeply committed to helping the people of his tribe and is a guardian of the Wixarika traditions and ceremonies.
Rutury is dedicated to helping anyone, in any culture, who feels they would benefit from the methods that have been passed down, and continue to be passed down, to him by the Elders of his community. This is his lineage, to be of service to those in need, unconditionally. Being in his presence is truly a rare blessing. Now as co-founder of Indios Huichol, Rutury continues his family’s legacy, hosting workshops and ceremonies at Ancient Springs Retreat Center, a beautiful sanctuary where he and Jaichima lived in the high desert in Cornville, near Sedona, Arizona.
