Greetings dear friends… I am wishing our world a very Happy New Year. Tatewari, Grandfather Spirit! We open our hearts to your healing which brings us wisdom and knowledge from all the corners of the Universe. With your blessing we will do our best to enhance your unconditional gift of love by not desecrating the sacred lands and honoring all of the living beings in our world. We will strive to learn to share and cultivate your wisdom and knowledge with dignity, as you have shared that wisdom with the human tribe since ancient times. I have been asked by my tribal people to share with you something about the ceremony they have been doing during this time of the New Year. In my Wixarika culture preparations begin seven days before the New Year’s Eve Ceremony, and a time of reflection and processing takes place for seven days after. This is a tradition we have practiced for many years in the Sierra Madre Mountains in Mexico. The community comes together in collective and personal preparations, whether that be fasting or fire tending, cooking, praying, or eliminating certain foods from their diets. People choose or are guided to do whatever tasks or practices may help them open themselves to a higher level of awareness. For those who may have shared our New Year's Ceremony here at the Center or in California, my tribal people do a similar ceremony with the fire and they offer their intentions in their own ways. This celebration is viewed in a similar way as we do in this culture in that it is a time to reflect on setting goals and intentions, a time to let go of old patterns and welcome in new possibilities. Some of these ceremonies are private while others are for anyone wanting to enhance their spiritual connection with themselves by gathering strength and support with their community, their Elders or their mentors. Many years ago my sister Jaichima was given permission to offer this gathering to the people outside of our tribe and she initiated the first New Year’s Ceremony at what is now called Wirikuta Springs. I have continued to carry on this tradition, as well as the legacy of my lineage and offer ceremonies and spiritual counseling, with no judgments or prejudice. May we all continue on our paths of learning, with the intention of improving our lives and the lives of those around us. I also want to share my appreciation for Anaya who has been collaborating with me and helping me compose my messages for the newsletters since we started sending them out last year. English is my third language as many of you know, so I give her an outline of my thoughts, or of what the Elders have given me to share, and then she tunes into what I want to express and translates this into English for me. My Wixarika language has hardly ever been a written language, at least not by our people. Other curious people like anthropologists, writers, or other seekers have wanted to phonetically record our words and their meanings. I have an easier time communicating with people in person than I do in letters so I am glad to have some assistance with the writing. PamPaDios Looking forward to our next ceremony Love and Blessings Rutury A note from Nahwi: I have been working for a very, very long time in a ceremony dealing with my parents. It is one of the hardest things I have ever done and I am nowhere near completion with it. It is one of those kinds of things that you get overwhelmed and have to back away for a bit and then you start again when you are clearer with yourself. At the moment with this work I am doing I am struggling with my problem of tending to make others happy, rather than nurturing myself. I can see most of my life with my parents was me trying to do anything I could to make them happy…they were extremely unhappy people and why I even thought I had the ability to change that is a mystery to me to this day…I still react in this manner to others…and my parents both died a very long time ago. I spend too much time and energy trying to please others while ignoring my own needs. The saddest part of this is I am not alone in this type of behavior…there are so many of us in this place, it is heartbreaking. I have come to the understanding that I keep doing this “learned one” because as a child I never had adults show me that we need to honor ourselves, that we need to look inside ourselves for approval, for support and for direction. I assume that is because they did not know that for themselves. Now I know that my innocent self is still within me…it is a comfort to know that it does not die…but we do need to still nurture it and honor it. That is part of what this extremely long ceremony is about. Touching that innocent child within me and being the parent that she never had.
