A few weeks from now families and friends will be celebrating Thanksgiving dinner, a time which can be a joyful celebration of our gathering together. Conversations of world events or loved ones who are far away from home will be subjects of the evening, and often a prayer is recited to give thanks and to welcome everyone. I remember the first time I celebrated Thanksgiving dinner with my sister Jaichima and it was a happy occasion to be with all of her family. Jaichima always cooked the turkey and it had to be the biggest bird because she believed it was better to have leftovers than not to have enough. Her kids would also bring all kinds of food and desserts, and quite often Jaichima would invite friends who did not have families near them, making sure they were welcome to be part of our family. It was a joyous feast that we all shared together. Once everyone had gone home after dinner, Jaichima and I would continue to do a sacred fire ceremony in the backyard of her house in Phoenix. This ceremony was to honor our ancestors, acknowledge our environment, and at the same time synchronize our ceremony with our Wixarika tribe located in the Sierra Madre Mountains in Mexico. She would pray and chant for many hours, pausing only to drink water and rest for few moments in between prayers. When she greeted the four elements with individuals prayers she began to weep like never before. I was worried and came over to sit next to her and whispered to ask if she was okay. She smiled to indicate she was fine, and while holding my hand she said, “Rutury, always remember that even though we are so far away from our culture we are never alone. In this culture we have people who are like our families, and we need each other to form the human tribe. The four elements are separate yet are one and they rely on each other to keep peace and harmony. When we practice peace and put those intentions into action our world begins to hum, and in that moment all the human tribe is in harmony again.” With that thought in my heart I send prayers of gratitude to our world, prayers for solutions to overcome hate and to support a movement of unity. I am told by my Wixarika tribal Elders that as a human tribe we need to rise up and stand tall, not to intimidate and create divisions, but rather to create a path of unity and balance. It is in helping and giving that we learn the art of gratitude. Our world has been supporting life with no conditions and we, the human tribe, have not listened well to our Mother Earth. It is up to us to start reciprocating what our Earth has done for us, and we can begin with baby steps or take long leaps towards that goal, whatever we contribute is deeply meaningful to ourselves and to our world. PamPaDios Looking forward to our next ceremony Love and Blessings Rutury A note from Nahwi: I had an email conversation with Erika recently and something I mentioned struck a chord in her. When she mentioned it in the next email I thought about it and saw that it is actually something I have been working with for myself for some time. “We often forget we can choose how we live” is what I had written to her. With all of the life changing events that have been going on around and in us, it is a way of looking at how we deal with the problems, grief and pain that surround us and are within us. The fires in California, the hurricanes in Texas, Florida, & Puerto Rico, the earthquake in Mexico have taken a toll on many of us, in so many ways. Nature is unpredictable, nature is strong, but we live within it and must somehow embrace it. Perhaps caring for mother earth in a respectful way, as her children, could help with the global warming and the chaos brought on by the disrespectful way many of us are living upon her. But it is not just Nature of the planet…it is also humans who have chosen to harm others, like the man driving though the bike lane in NY, or the man in Los Vegas who massacred people enjoying a concert, and now the shootings in the church in Texas, and of course these kinds of events are happening all over the world. This is all hard, hard stuff. It is painful; it is devastating it makes many of us want to hide under the covers. But it also makes some people run out in to the fiery night and wake up neighbors so they can flee for their lives. Or they pack up water, food and supplies and drive to Texas or Florida because they know the government is not going to respond quickly enough. They raise money to help neighbors who have lost everything but the clothes on their backs. They take in animals that are lost and hurt. Children make loving cards and signs which remind us what love really is. And of course we pray… we pray for those we know and love and we pray for everyone touched by the tragedies. We light candles, we gather together to pray, we pray alone. It all makes a difference in the world…and in us. We have a choice in how we live. We can choose to participate in the kindness and goodness that we are all capable of. We can assist in ways that make a difference. We can be the kind of Human Beings we choose to be.
