Greetings Every One!

The work we are doing could not continue without you.  We are very grateful for your support and help.  Every single prayer and donation is appreciated more than you can know. Thank you so very much for your support.

A note from Rutury

Que Tuma Aku. Greetings Dear Friends,
Tatewari, Grandfather Spirit. We open our hearts to your healing which brings us wisdom and knowledge from all corners of the Universe.
As I mentioned in the March newsletter, Anaya and I had the privilege to travel again to Mexico and continue the healing ceremonies with my Wixarika tribe. While we were there we also were informed about the current situation regarding ongoing land disputes that have been escalating for years between Mexican ranchers and our tribal people. Not unlike in many other countries, the ranchers have been living for many years on land that they have basically claimed as their own as ‘settlers’. This land has traditionally been Wixarika tribal land and the people have been in a struggle to reclaim their ancestral lands back from the ranchers.
During this process there have been many conflicts. The Huichol people have been intimidated, mocked, called unimaginable names, and have been violated and violently treated.  Some tribal people who were outspoken have been beaten and some were murdered. These precious people put their lives in the line of fire and their names will forever be included in our daily prayers. Heated arguments and serious threats have been expressed from both sides, to the extent that local and state authorities were brought in to prevent any further violence.
I was told about all of these happenings and I was reminded of how modern laws and the concept of land ownership have created so much conflict between Native people and ‘settlers’ and how both sides feel strongly about their rights. I encouraged my people not to return the bad behavior they were receiving from the ranchers but to try their best to find a peaceful solution as best as they could. I was told about this situation when I was in Tepic and a meeting was organized there where I met with a representative of the ranch owners as well as a number of respresentatives of a few of the Wixarika communities. My people wanted me to be present and let the ranchers know that there were people who were aware of this situation in the States and that they had outside help.
I am happy to say that both sides have recently come to an agreement to at least reach out for the help of an independent mediator. The hopes are that the mediator will review all of the documents and hear both sides and be able to find a way to calm what has become a very hostile and dangerous situation. One problem is of course that my people have never had any documents to prove they own the land; they don’t even have that concept. They have been stewards of the land, and they have developed deep connections to it over many, many years. They do not want to be pushed out and off of their ancestral land any further. Eventually a peaceful solution has to be found and both sides have very different perspectives, which is very challenging. If you believe in prayers include us in your daily ceremonies
After this meeting was over I was taken to another room. It was a dark room and the only lights I could see were candles being lit. Slowly my eyes adjusted and I could see a group of Wixarikas. I was in the room with the wisdom and knowledge cultivators, the Wixarika Elders. Everyone was sitting on the floor as they did not want to sit on chairs. I looked around and acknowledged everyone in silence and noticed they were masticating the sacred medicine plant and smoking sacred tobacco. The room was full of an herbal aroma and it felt right to be there with them. I could see in their faces a sadness as three members of their circle had died since the last time I saw them. In our culture when one is with Elders you don’t invite yourself to sit with them or start a conversation, you only engage with them when they initiate the conversation. I stood outside of their circle waiting for their invitation, meanwhile many emotions started to spiral in my stomach making me feel dizzy and weak throughout my body. I looked for a wall to lean on when suddenly I dropped to my knees and started to weep like a child. I wanted to control my emotion but could not stop something that was happening naturally. When I finally surrendered I heard the voices of my parents and my sister Jaichima. They were having a conversation about many things, just like they would in real life. What grabbed my attention was that they could not agree on what fruit trees to plant and where they should be. I surprised myself by saying out loud, “What do you mean you don't know what kind of fruit trees to plant and where?” That’s when one of the female Elders came over to tell me not to question them as I will dissipate what I was hearing. She was right because I tried to connect to that atmosphere again but it had vanished for the moment. I continued to be on my knees and a male Elder’s voice said, “Welcome RuturyTemay. We see you don’t travel alone as your family spirits are with you always. We understand they were all alive with you at one time and now they have all passed on and you must continue to carry their legacy. Keep rising no matter what obstacles are in your way. Honor them and share their visions with all the people you work with”.
Then two female Elders of my tribe started to chant and pray, both taking turns whispering into my ears prayers and chants that I had never heard before. They continued to blow the smoke of sacred tobacco all over my body, casting away the shadow voices and stagnant energy that I had accumulated since my last ceremony with them. The smoke of the sacred tobacco was not only purifying but was also opening new gates for new beginnings. I sincerely felt like I was levitating because I could see all of us in that gathering from every angle of the room. Then one of the female Elders said, “Close your eyes and open your mouth”. Through a hollow bamboo she blew an herbal liquid into my mouth and continued to say “Before you swallow be with it”. What I felt on my tongue was bitter and hot like fire, and at the same time it had a flavor of light sweetness. I was told to swallow it delicately, and upon completing this ceremony I was given pieces of medicine plant, each piece from each Elder.
Then everyone gathered to touch my face, hair, and clothing, and at that moment I thought they were just admiring my clothing but in reality they were doing a blessing ceremony and entrusting me to carry their essence and ceremony to be able to share with everyone.

On another note, I understand a lot of people in our world celebrate Easter this month. No matter what you believe, let us pray for harmony and peace in our world.

Que Tuma Aku. Greetings Dear Friends,
Tatewari, Grandfather Spirit. We open our hearts to your healing which brings us wisdom and knowledge from all corners of the Universe.

Hello to my human tribe family, and apologies to all of you as we are late sending this newsletter. Anaya and I just returned from Mexico with news from my Wixarika tribe. We are carrying their energy and gratitude from them to all of you, as Indios Huichol continues to support them not only financially, but emotionally and spiritually.

First I would like to share some of my thoughts and experiences I had while Anaya and I recently attended the Arizona Psychedelic Conference in Tempe Arizona. Some of you commented on the photo I posted on Facebook February 2019.
When I first heard of this event my feelings were mixed primarily because of what I had encountered in my life in the early 1970s when my mother and father and I would travel to do our ceremonies to Laguna Santa Maria DelOro, Mexcaltitan, and San Blas. As we walked the streets on our way to the Mercado in Tepic to buy supplies to bring to our village, we would notice that we were being followed by one or a couple of foreign people who tried not to be obvious. Eventually they would ask my father in Spanish if they could follow us to our village to experience our plant medicine ceremony. My father Hakaula was polite and humble and always thought that people would reciprocate the same kindness back to him. Some people were respectful but the majority of people misinterpreted him and assumed he was naive and could easily be taken advantage of.

With limited Spanish my father would made the effort of explaining to people that is was inappropriate for them to follow us and expect to be part of a ceremony with the medicine plant when he did not even know them. To do a medicine plant ceremony takes various steps of ceremonial preparations, self discipline, and focusing on your intentions. The participants must be invited by someone who knows these steps and in our culture it is not appropriate to invite yourself unless you’ve spent the time to understand how to be a part of our ceremonies and our ways. When the time comes to participate in a medicine plant ceremony it is a privilege and not a right for this sacrament to take place. We also believe that it is best to be guided by traditional people who have a deep knowledge and relationship with the medicine.
As I said, a few people understood and respected my father’s words but with others as soon as we walked away from them and started going towards our village trails we still noticed we were being followed. They tried hard to stay with us on the rugged trails but eventually we would lose them. I say they tried hard because no one succeeded to enter our villages uninvited while my father was alive.
From the moment we are born in our villages our parents introduce us to our surroundings and all the elements, giving us an advantage when being followed on the trails in the Sierra Madre. We are experts at traveling the less traveled places, crossing rivers, leaving no trace, and so ultimately we are more able to protect our environment.
Every time we faced this kind of situation I could see my father’s struggle with himself. As a traditional medicine person his priority was to protect us and his community but also bring awareness to all cultures with our ceremonies. He would say “I see and sense a great urgency to protect our medicine plant and ceremonies, however I also feel the time is nearing when all cultures can come together to share our wisdom and knowledge. As we have to protect our ceremonies and medicine plants I also see modern humanity stepping forward to understand and embrace the alternative healing that has existed for centuries in native cultures. This may not come together in my life time but you my son RuturyTemay can represent our tribe and be the bridge between modern and ancient healing”.

After attending the Arizona Psychedelics Conference my skeptical feelings were turned towards hope and inspiration. At this conference there were professors, doctors, cultivators of medicine plants, scientists, healers, ceremonialists, veterans, and all kinds of people who had received profound healing with plant medicine. These people were taking this subject very seriously and with a lot of respect, although there is always something more that can be brought forward to further our practices and awareness. One common theme I heard from all of the presenters was that working with plant medicine is a serious ceremony and proper guidance is necessary for the participant’s safety and deeper healing.

There is a lot of interest and a big movement happening around the world involving the healing and wisdom of plant medicine. I have thought that perhaps my Wixarika Elders in one of their visions saw this coming and that’s why they have been encouraging for me to hold ceremonies to introduce the healing plant medicine with respect, and embrace these spiritual teachings for the well being of all humanity. So this is the news that is carried back from my people, that I am getting ready to introduce more of our sacred ceremonies to the Human Tribe. I am inviting you.

A note from Anaya

This woman is so beautiful. We’ve developed a wonderful friendship over the years and she is always the first person I go to see when we get to Tepic. She is so humble and her presence moves me deeply. We don’t understand each other in words but we hug a lot and laugh and Rutury translates what she is saying to me in their traditional language. When she speaks it sounds like singing to me and I always look forward to seeing her.
When Rutury and I got to Tepic this last trip she was not in her usual ’spot’ in front of the church selling her beadwork and I was afraid I might never see her again. There was no news of her and I wondered how she was doing, or if she was still around…and then there she was on our last day in Mexico in Sayulita, a place I had never seen her in before, and we both just about fell over with surprise and happiness. Some of her beadwork is now with us, and in fact another beautiful woman who was just visiting us here at the Center this weekend with her lovely sister (you know who you are) now has one of her bracelets. It’s amazing to think of how these beads travel through the world and how they are connecting people through the prayers and hopes these traditional artists put into every piece. I know that it makes this Elder so happy to know that a part of her is traveling with somebody and carrying her blessings.

Que Tuma Aku. Greetings Dear Friends!
Tatewari, Grandfather Spirit. We open our hearts to your healing which brings us wisdom and knowledge from all corners of the Universe.
I was born in my Wixarika village in the Sierra Madre Mountains of Mexico and lived there until my early teens. I have shared with you some of my experiences with my family and the way of life with my Wixarika Huichol tribe. Here is another thing that happened in my childhood.

I was fortunate to accompany my father in various ceremonial commitments he had in our community. One particular responsibility my father had was to oversee and do the blessings for the yearly change of Messengers. We call them Staff Messengers and they are young men who carry staffs decorated with ribbons that are certain colors depending on the village where they come from. They are the ones who carry communications and news between places or are caretakers of certain areas. When we see them with their staffs we respect and support them and their commitment. They move through the communities and keep them linked and it is an honor to hold this position for a year. After the blessings my father and I were supposed to return home but as it turned out his services were needed for a longer time. Since it was getting late he sent me home on my own as I needed to attend school the following morning.
As a family we had traveled this trail many times so I knew it very well, plus it was only a few hours of walking. About half way home I heard a yelp and a cry and since it was at night the sound really scared me. I started to walk fast making sure to stay vigilant to what was around me. There was a half moon and in the moonlight I could see the shadows of the trees, clouds, and the mountains. When I heard the sound again I was about to run but it was like a baby crying and then I sensed it was some kind of baby animal. I stopped and walked slowly towards a ditch where the crying was coming from. To my left there was large rock twice my size and beneath it was like a nest with rugged edges about 2 feet deep and wide. Inside of it was a baby puppy trying to get out and it could not manage to climb out on its own. From what I could see it was born there and it looked like either all the other puppies got out or someone took them and forgot one as it was obviously left behind. The mom was nowhere around so I lifted the puppy and it seemed to calm both of us. It was gorgeous shiny black with a white mark on its left paw. The aroma of baby puppy was incredible and all the way home it kept sucking my thumb. As soon as I arrived home I showed it to my mother and she said oh! Look at her shiny eyes feed her she is hungry! I told her I did not know how to feed her and she proceeded to show me by combining her saliva and some kind of herb tea and she gently put the liquid in small amounts in the puppy’s mouth. She said to do this for about a week and after that I should chew my food and give it to the puppy in small amounts until she was able to eat on her own.
Then my mother asked me if I knew the gender. I said no and she told me it was a female and it was my dog forever since I found it, and to try not to wait too long to name her. I told my mother I would think about what to name her. That night was incredible and my dog and I slept together feeling like we had found each other and nothing was going to separate us. I was totally in love with that baby puppy. When I woke up I went to my mother and told her I had a dream about Kalutza. This means something like a spark in the blackness, in the deepest dark. That is what I named my puppy. She was Kalutza.
Years went by fast and both of us grew up together. My parents always encouraged me not only to learn to communicate with words but also to embrace the other unspoken language between myself and my dog. My mother took the time to teach me as she explained this to me. “Giving and receiving unconditional love is a beautiful sensation. You feel like no matter where you walk you are walking on clouds and above all love is in everything and everywhere. It appears at different times in our life, sometimes we feel it before it comes to us and other times we stumble into it when we least expect it. For instance when you found your new puppy it awakened new feelings elevating you into a totally new dimension of emotions. Treasure those feelings and treasure your puppy no matter what obstacles may be there in your way”.
My puppy became my best companion and we were inseparable for many years. In my long travels she always went ahead of me to protect the trail and alert me if anyone was coming towards us. She was a truly devoted dog. I’m sad to say that in February of 1976 my dog was killed in a brutal way by somebody who was a cruel bully and wanted to hurt me because I finally stood up to him. Since that time and every year I honor my dog for teaching me who she was and coming into my life when she did unexpectedly.
I am also grateful for my sweet mother for teaching me about who she was. Her simple and profound way of loving taught me volumes of life lessons that I am still learning about today. My heart weeps every time I relive the moment of her last words whispered into my ears. Her ceremony and blessings are in the roots of who I am and even though she made a peaceful transition in February 1987 sometimes it feels to me like it just happened a few days ago. Thank you for the memories and teachings.
Happy Valentines Everyone

A note from Nahwi

I Don’t Want To!
Avoidance, boy am I good at it!  I have been meditating on my very large “box” of excuses, and truths to my not doing things that need to be taken care of.  The beauty of meditation is that we don’t focus on what runs though our head…we acknowledge it and let it go (OK some things are harder to let pass I do acknowledge that).
I find it a bit confusing that I will take care of the bills, not fond of it but want it completed.  I can work on the tax info for Indios Huichol and Fiberholics…not fun but not hard.  But when it comes to personal taxes, dusting, and cleaning widows…I can find every excuse in the book and make up more if needed.
When all this passed in my meditation I found some things actually scare me (tall windows and a large step ladder…bouts of vertigo and thinning bones…OK that is a justified concern…I will ask for help.
Dusting…hate it…I had no idea the desert was so dusty!  I know it sounds stupid, but I am still surprised after 20 years here how everything including our cats and dogs are dusty!   My house is filled with bookshelves, and knick knacks and love rocks (husband brings back a love rock for me every few days from his walks.)   I could spend my whole life dusting and then start right over again.  So in my mediation I saw I need to actually do a lot of letting go of things (physical and preconceived “truths”) so that I can live a balanced life. I need to go though things and decide if I want them in my life or need them in my life.  If I am unsure…I need to find another home for them.

Taxes…not fun…have to do…I do it for two other organizations and have never had this resentment or frustration …I know our personal finances inside and out…I know how to do it and it is not hard…it just takes up a lot of time and energy and takes over the dining room table. What is the problem here?  Every single time I finish it and get it to the Accountant, I feel like I won a race…so why the stalling? Why the lousy mood?  It does not scare me; I do not feel stupid or lost.  When mediating about it I may have found at least a glimmer…it is boring…as simple as that…I would rather be doing anything else…it is like sitting in a tire place waiting for your car to go up on the jack and have new tires put on and balanced. Maybe like the tires I just have to ride it out and surrender to allowing myself to be bored for a few hours.   I may not have an answer to “fixing” this one, but I have identified why I avoid it…does not sound like much but it is actually huge.
Now would anyone like to come over and dust?

Greetings Every One!

The work we are doing could not continue without you.  We are very grateful for your support and help.  Every single prayer and donation is appreciated more than you can know. Thank you so very much for your support.

A note from Rutury

Que Tuma Aku. Greetings Dear Friends! Tatewari, Grandfather Spirit. We open our hearts to your healing which brings us wisdom and knowledge from all corners of the Universe.
Happy New Year and many new beginnings to everyone! May all your resolutions be attainable as you journey in life.
At Wirikuta Springs we are still feeling the effects of Winter Solstice with its beautiful blessings, and we carried the energy of the Winter Solstice forward to merge with our New Year’s ceremony to support balance and harmony in our world. We lit the sacred fire and kept it burning 24 hours for 4 nights in a row. The feeling was magical on many levels as we aligned ourselves with the four elements and synchronized our fire ceremony with the fire that kept burning in our village with our Wixarika Elders. It is a tradition in our culture to remain steadfast during ritual ceremonies around the fire, no matter the circumstances. People are assigned to be guardians of the sacred fire and that responsibility is to be taken seriously as the community depends on the person. We come together to support one another with the understanding that these kind of ritual ceremonies are very sacred and we all benefit with mutual support as a community.
At our New Year’s ceremony participants took turns to protect and attend to the sacred fire. For some people it was hard to stay awake and sit outside with the snow and cold weather, yet it was also sweet to be in communion with Nature and be warmed by the fire in the beautiful snow. Thank you everyone and especially to Matthew Young for your commitment and vigilance as the fire keeper for our ceremony.
In my Huichol Wixarika culture every New Year’s ceremony honors our Earth and everything that is in it. Our credo is that the more we acknowledge, appreciate, and cultivate what our Mother Earth has given us, in turn she reciprocates our thoughts, prayers and intentions. Protecting and respecting our Mother Earth has always been very important to us. We know she is alive and needs our nourishment so she can continue to sustain us for many years to come, and we see her beauty reflected in the smiles of innocent children. We were so blessed to have so many young ones at our New Year’s ceremony! I know that some of them were disappointed that because of the snow we were not able to put luminarias around the whole property but they nevertheless enthusiastically participated in our improvised alternate plans.
In our candle luminaria ceremony we first make one luminaria representing ourselves as we are the source light for many others, we then proceed to make more for our loved ones by drawing symbols and/or writing names on the bags. We honor those who may or may not still be in touch with us, or who have made their transition, or anyone who needs a prayer, a light, to support their journey, no matter where in the world they may reside.
If you are reading this newsletter you were included in our New Year’s ceremony because you matter to us and you are important to this world. When all the candles are lit you can see and feel everyone’s energy, and when you walk in between the candles you can truly sense the bridge between us and the spirit realm. It is a truly one of kind experience and a gift from beyond.
I am honored to be given the permission by my Wixarika Elders to share this and many more ceremonies with all of you. With humble gratitude in my heart I say thank you for having an interest in my Wixarika culture. As my Wixarika tribe says, the world belongs to all of us. Our prayers, thoughts and actions affect our world, so let’s support each other with our best efforts and continue our dance of life in our ceremonies for peace and harmony.

A note from Nahwi

This time of year is usually very hard for me.    I tend to isolate myself while others enjoy gathering together for Christmas or whatever holiday name you give your celebration.  Then we go on to New Year.  New Year is the time of reflection for me more than any other time of year.  What have I done in this pass year?  Why did I do these things?  How do I feel about them? So many questions and not always…answers.

Then I go to a place that is not really healthy.  I start being disappointed in myself.  Why on earth can’t I reach the spot where I feel like I have accomplished something?  I feel like despite what all I do, I just feel like I am waiting for “it” to happen.  And once again, somehow, some way I missed the boat…again. I never even saw it at the dock!
But this year I am coming to a different realization.  Those goals were never mine…they were what I thought I should be reaching for. They are what I was told I needed to reach for.  I do not have to prove myself.  I am...simply that “I am” and that is enough.

I am who I am and that person does try to live a loving, caring, kind life. Of course I get angry and can be short (pun not intended).  But the important part is I am recognizing it when it is happening and, well, sometimes that is who I am.

When I reach into myself in a curious way, like a child’s curiosity, I can see that I am stronger and happier when I am in tune with my own values.  It is then that I am aware that I am still becoming; and that I will always be in the state of becoming!

It could be worse!

Greetings Every One!

The work we are doing could not continue without you.  We are very grateful for your support and help.  Every single prayer and donation is appreciated more than you can know. Thank you so very much for your support.

A note from Rutury:

Que Tuma Aku. Greetings Dear Friends,
Tatewari, Grandfather Spirit. We open our hearts to your healing which brings us wisdom and knowledge from all corners of the Universe.
About one week ago I had the opportunity to speak with someone from my Wixarika tribe. He spoke with me about a couple of issues that continue to threaten our communities as our lands are being taken over in many places by non-tribal people in Mexico. He wanted my advice on how to deal with the hostile confrontations they were having without escalating the conflicts. Our people are being murdered and abused, and even when the incidents are reported to the local authorities, nothing is resolved. The government officials in Mexico are notoriously corrupt and there are many Mexican people who still have racist beliefs about indigenous people. There are also others who support our rights and we do have lawyers working on our behalf but they face a serious challenge towards any justice in these cases. After I made a few suggestions and talked through some possible approaches to use he said that he wanted to share another story with me.
He told me, “As you know Rutury Temay, about four years ago I became part of the Elder Circle to guard and protect the ancient traditions in our culture. Since that time I have traveled to many of our sacred sites and have found atrocities and disrespect. Perhaps people even came with good intentions but there was garbage, graffiti, and even human waste left behind. I feel sad that now these places need to be closed to keep people out, and we are only to be allowed in with the proper permit to be allowed to pray. When I heard that you were bringing people from the United States to meet some of us and to visit some of our sacred sites, I was very skeptical and was filled with mistrust. I was upset with you for bringing people to our culture and even spoke badly about you behind your back without your presence. I wondered why you were bringing people here and what your intention was, how could you trust people from another culture? Then a few days ago something interesting happened.
I went to Santa Maria Del Oro, a sacred lake where we bring offerings and pray for our friends and family. After completing my prayers that evening I sat down near the edge of the lake contemplating the many times I had been there with my parents who have since made their transition. While deep in thought I began to sense a movement in the ground. At first I thought oh no! it is an earthquake! I realized there was no earthquake but in fact the water in the entire lake was moving and gaining momentum and from a distance I could hear and see people struggling in the middle of the lake. They were trying to get to the shore, it was late at night with no moon shining anywhere and all I could see were a couple of candle lights in the middle of the group of people in the water. I got up to see if I could help and then I saw that a boat showed up to rescue them. Once everyone was safe they started heading towards me and I was shocked to see that most of these people where from my tribe. There were five rescuers, four from the United States and one Mexican. At this moment I heard my name echoing out loud in the canyon and that’s when I came to my senses and wondered, what is this? Then I realized that I had a powerful vision.
When I shared this vivid vision with the Elders they advised me to speak directly to you to be able to adjust my assumptions about you working with outside people and sharing our ways with them. At the same time I was reminded by the Elders that not all people are disrespectful and have bad intentions when they visit sacred areas. Sometimes the destroyers act that way because they are in pain themselves, physically and spiritually, and they need help. Upon hearing this my soul became tender and hopeful for the future and since that time my prayers go out to them.
You see, I have seen many foreign people come and mimic our ways and declare they are being trained to be ‘Huichol Shamans’, which can never be done. They have people from our tribe who help them because they can support their families with the money they get paid. They tell them what they want to hear. Or foreigners come to be healed with our medicine and sometimes do not know how to do this respectfully. This has all been very damaging to us, the Elders find this to be very insulting and like a violation in the deepest ways. We do not trust these people, we are willing to help them with our healing ways but they take our ceremonies and perform them like a show to impress. Now I understand that you are not doing this Rutury Temay, that the people you bring come with respect and that they are not being taught by you to be like us but guided to be more themselves, using our ways to help them. I have been told this by our people but now my vision confirmed this to me. And I have also seen how the money that you donate to us has helped our community. Our tribe does not need to be saved by you or anyone else, but I saw in my vision that we can help each other in unconditional ways. Now Rutury Temay, tell everyone who came with you to Mexico and to our sacred sites that I send my humble gratitude and blessings to them and to their families. Their unconditional love and support is making a difference in our communities and we thank them.”
It is hard for my people to trust foreigners because of what they have experienced and seen. They have also known great kindness and support from other organizations as well but they have also often been disappointed. These man’s words were good words for me to hear as Anaya and I are planning the Mexico workshops for 2019. We will be taking groups to Teotihuacan and to Wirikuta and we will let you know the details when they are confirmed. It is a delicate connection with the Wixarika people that we have started with our workshops and we look forward to building these relationships for years to come.
I will be seeing some of you for our New Year gathering but I will not see a lot of you. I am letting you know that there will be a candle lit for you and your loved ones, along with my prayers for your well-being. May the spirit of the holidays bring you joy, love, peace, and harmony and keep you and your family safe.
I appreciate your thoughts and your love in my life.

2019 New Year Ceremony
Dec 30th to Jan 1st

Indios Huichol would like to invite you to join us for our   2019 New Year’s Ceremony Sunday December 30th-Tuesday January 1st!

We are continuing the tradition of gathering together with family and friends for this special time of welcoming in the New Year and reflecting on what our goals are for ourselves and for our community. We are offering this ceremony as our gift. It is an opportunity to be at the Center for those who may find it a challenge to be able to attend other workshops during the year, for people who have never been here and want to meet us and see the Center, as well as for others who regularly come to the Center for other events and ceremonies and who enjoy being with our community for this special gathering.
The Center will be open on noon Sunday December 30th and our event will end by noon on January 1st. People will be responsible for accommodating their own food needs and usually groups form to help one another with the task of preparing food and cleaning up for a meal or two for all the participants. We will have sign up lists and encourage you to join a cooking and clean up team. These collaborations have managed to work beautifully in past years and no doubt they will again for this gathering as well.
PLEASE NOTE: We listed this event in our November newsletter and the rooms are filling up.
Please contact   nahwi@earthlink.net to reserve a room or be put on the waiting list for cancellations.  Rooms will be reserved on a first response basis and some solo people may be asked to share a double room if need be. We also will have camping available (we can provide a few people with tents and sleeping bags) and there are of course many local accommodations in the area. We have a few recommendations for other accommodations if you want us to pass those on to you.
We look forward to being with you to greet the new year,
Rutury, Anaya, and Nahwi

Greetings Every One!

The work we are doing could not continue without you.  We are very grateful for your support and help.  Every single prayer and donation is appreciated more than you can know. Thank you so very much for your support.

A note from Rutury:

Que Tuma Aku. Greetings Dear Friends,
Tatewari, Grandfather Spirit. We open our hearts to your healing which brings us wisdom and knowledge from all corners of the Universe.

In October Anaya and I traveled to attend the Bioneers Conference at the Marin Center in San Rafael California. Anaya had been there many times, like last year when she invited me to join her and I somehow had already made up an assumption about this conference, thinking it probably was good for others but it was definitely not for me. Plus emotionally at the time I was processing many things in life and was not feeling up for that kind of experience. So when the conversation came up this year and she extended the invitation once again, I surprised myself with the answer, that yes we would travel there to attend this gathering together, and also meet her daughter Stella there and another friend. I am glad I did because the 3 day event was beyond my expectation, what was shared was very inspiring information for all the attendees. The speakers and special guests not only brought awareness and knowledge combined with hope but also elevated positive energy to a higher level. No matter where you look you saw a radiant smile from every gender young or older, and above all it was genuine. The sense of community was everywhere you walked, plain and simple you were welcome.
The last time I felt this kind of energy was in one of the healing ceremonies with my Huichol Wixarika Elders, where our gatherings are not to impress and no one is there to out shine one another. Our prayers, healing and ceremonies are authentic and organic, we gather with one goal in mind to talk about the climate change and how we can all help to make a difference. My Wixarika Elders have always encouraged me to hold gatherings like this at Wirikuta Springs, where people can come together from all walks of life to learn, share, be inspired and support one another in whatever way that is. I will do my best to attend the Bioneers Conference again next year.

A few weeks from now everyone will be celebrating Thanksgiving Day and dinner, and some people will be traveling from a distance to be with parents and friends to celebrate the special occasion. My sincere blessings go out to all of you.
However, with most Native people from all over the world Thanksgiving is honored differently. Some will be protesting for the atrocities that continue to this day to demean their culture. Others will be gathering voices from their Elders to bring them forward where they can be heard worldwide, and many will be holding ceremonies with offerings and prayers for world peace.
In the Wixarika culture, we practice gratitude every night and morning, not just when things are perfect but also in moments of difficult times. Therefore when we pray, the duality of our lives is acknowledged as our intention is to bring balance to our world and in ourselves. When we take a moment to inhale and exhale the fresh clean air that is not polluted with any harsh chemicals, we say thank you to all living things and we vow to fight and protect the ecology of our lands, as we believe our world belongs to all of us and not to one person or one family.

To everyone who knows me, with humbleness I say thank you for your love and support, I am also grateful to my ancestors and to be a part of this magnificent world, and will continue to practice what my parents taught me. Be at service, be helpful, and do it unconditionally. As we gather for Thanksgiving let us not just be grateful for our family and friends but also include in our prayers those who have no home or a place to go and celebrate Thanksgiving dinner. Light a candle for them as they need the warmth and light to keep their hopes alive.

On another note, I’m looking forward to seeing some of you in a few days for our November pilgrimage and I’m also looking forward to welcoming everyone at our New Year’s ceremony.

Dia De Los Muertos at Tlaquepaque

A note from Anaya

As Rutury mentioned in his letter, we attended the Bioneers Conference this year and it was deeply inspiring in many ways. This conference has been a profound reminder of how powerful a real sense of community can be for me and for many, many others, and it has greatly enriched my life and also my daughter’s since we first started participating. The wealth of knowledge, wisdom, intention, and work being done by so many people around the world to heal our environment, our systems, and our relationships is astounding. What was shared in the lectures and discussions, art, music, workshops, and in the energy of being in a group of thousands of people in an elevated state of awareness was literally mind blowing. As in my mind was blown wide open, and my heart, and my soul. It was not unlike the best music festivals I’ve been to, tapping into that expansive sense of personal and collective openness, but geared more for scientists, organizers, environmentalists, and for anybody interested in understanding ways we can heal this planet and heal and/or fine tune our relationships with one another. Every year I go I am more and more amazed at the possibility and magnificence that is available to us as human beings, and the immense amount of love and wisdom that is being shared, especially at this most challenging and threatening time in our world’s very fragile state. The duality of what is happening at this moment in our culture as the many tribes we are as well as the collective Human Tribe, and in our environment, could not have been better expressed than by the many speakers and attendees at this conference. I encourage you all to check out their website, their podcasts, their radio station, their other events, and the next conference in October. I cannot express how meaningful an experience it is, and how many people I know who have said, “why didn’t I find out about this sooner? “ It is certainly one of the most profound ceremonies I have been a part of.

A note from Rutury:

Que Tuma Aku. Greetings Dear Friends,

Tatewari, Grandfather Spirit. We open our hearts to your healing which brings us wisdom and knowledge from all corners of the Universe.

Autumn Equinox has arrived, you can feel it in the air and more so when you take a walk in nature or meditate in the stillness of the moment. Truly this time of year is a great gift from nature to all of us as the human tribe and we are blessed to experience what happens in the cycles of seasons in our world. In my Wixarika culture we appreciate the changes of seasons and we honor the transformation. It can be magical and mesmerizing when we allow ourselves to be and feel one with Nature. With every change of season we are given the opportunity to make adjustments in ourselves and in our lives, with the understanding that before things can manifest we must make room in ourselves for new beginnings to take root and create new designs.

How do we make room or prepare ourselves for new beginnings? For the Wixarika  people our ceremonies are essential for moving into new beginnings. It is important to remember that once a commitment is made for any kind of healing, nothing may be immediately clear or easy. The journey of healing is sometimes hard and long, often making you feel that nothing is working. At the end of every cycle and with every step you make, it’s good to be reminded that the efforts you make will encourage you to step out of the same nest with the same cobwebs that may have trapped you for many years.

We also believe that our ceremonies and rituals support our Environment and at the same time help our community to live more balanced lives, and above all be in harmony with one another and our Earth.

On another note, at the end of this month and in the beginning of November I encourage you to take a moment and light a candle in honor of your loved ones and your ancestors to celebrate Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Whatever day you choose make it a joyful day to remember your loved ones, as they have walked the trails before us so we could have the life we live now. It’s important to remember that honoring them does not mean that you forgive them if they have mistreated you. Hopefully you have learned from their mistakes and will not carry on the legacy of their bad behavior, while appreciating the gifts that you were also given from your family and friends.

I honor my family and my ancestors for their commitment to be in my prayers and ceremonies. I hear and sense them quite often, especially in my moments of solitude. My father and sister used to say that when tears make their way through our eyes is not because we are sad, it is because our souls need to refresh themselves to see and think more clearly.

I will share with all of you a picture of my father Hakaula and my sister Jaichima, bless their souls.

A note from Nahwi:

I have been doing a lot of knitting on prayer scarves.  These are scarves with prayers in certain stitches.  The current ones have to do with trusting the Truth our Knowing.  That conviction deep in your being that has no attachments to it…no facts, no statistics, no research…just that “gut “knowing what is.   I see that as my soul talking to me and I have to remind myself to pay attention because it is always right. These scarves are physical prayers to remind me of this.

I came across this quote the other day and it simply confirms it all to me.
“There is in you something that waits and listens for the sound of the genuine in yourself.
It is the only true guide you will ever have.”
Howard Thurman

Greetings Every One!

The work we are doing could not continue without you.  We are very grateful for your support and help.  Every single prayer and donation is appreciated more than you can know. Thank you so very much for your support.

A note from Rutury:

Que Tuma Aku. Greetings Dear Friends,
Tatewari, Grandfather Spirit! We open our hearts to your healing which brings us wisdom and knowledge from all corners of the Universe.
Whenever there is a pilgrimage in the Wixarika Huichol culture everyone in the community is eager to know who is being called by the pilgrimage spirit. We all understand that the journey is not only a commitment to ourselves; it is a commitment for our family and a deepening of our sense of service for our human tribe. As a part of our pilgrimages we pay respect to the sacred sites that have sustained our spiritual growth for centuries. The journey to Wirikuta is for both genders, young and old, as we believe spiritual growth has no age or boundaries. Wirikuta is the most sacred site for the Wixarika people, a place in the high desert in Mexico where we hunt and gather our most sacred medicinal healing plant Hikuri, the peyote cactus. The opportunity for experiencing a spiritual awakening is an important part of our culture for everyone.
Throughout the years things have changed. What used to take one month to walk to the sacred site of Wirikuta now takes a couple of days using modern vehicles to get there. What has not changed are our rituals, chants, and prayers. They continue to be the candle light that has not gone out despite the strong winds blowing from all angles, and that light keeps us focused and connected to our ancient ceremonies.
I am blessed to have had the journey to Wirikuta with my grandfather, mother, many mentors, and of course my father. The many nights and days that it took us to get us there was a lesson that I will treasure for the rest of my life, and without question the ceremonies with my family bonded me closer to my sacred human design.
I remember my first journey to Wirikuta when I did not make it all the way, when blisters on my feet, infections, hunger and fatigue played a big role in my not being able to push beyond my limits. When I brought this to the attention of my superiors I was afraid of disappointing the group, but not one person made me feel separate or outcast from the rest of the participants. Contrary to that I was acknowledged for having made it as far as I did, and was never made to feel ashamed or defined as a loser.
I am stubborn, which brings its own duality…well it came in handy after this pilgrimage as I was determined to prepare myself for the next 8 months balancing my mind, body and spirit. When the time came to travel again to Wirikuta I was more than ready, or at least I thought I was. It was our third week of walking, and on this particular day it had been raining all day and into the night. Being in the month of November it was common to have rain and to be cold. The four leaders decided it was time to camp alongside a small creek for the night, so in the early morning we could all submerge our bodies in the icy cold spring water before leaving the site. We built a fire and people were assigned to hold special thoughts and take turns watching the fire all night. After our camp was set up the leaders sat around the fire and it was time to tell stories about the people who had traveled this trail and done this journey before us. I looked forward to listening to them speak and had picked my spot around the fire and was ready to soak in every word. Then I was told to get up to receive my assignment for the night. Feeling disappointed I got up because I wanted to hear the stories but I was also eager for my new assignment. I was to stay near the creek all night to listen and learn the whispers and melodies of the spring creek water. The night was windy combined with a cold rain and I was freezing to my bones. I managed to stay awake all night and watching the nice warm fire from a distance taught me to appreciate nature more than ever. When the early morning arrived I was feeling the symptoms of a flu coming over me and I got in line with everyone else as they prepared to go into the water. Taking some of their clothing and bags off to prepare, people stepped into the stream and then emerged greatly energized from the shock of the cold water. When my turn came to go into the spring it felt like some force lifted me up, throwing my entire body with all my clothing still on into the freezing water. I struggled in the water and had to get help to get out onto the ground, feeling ashamed that I was having such a hard time. Right at that moment I started to feel sick and vomited out the small amount of food I had in my stomach. I could also sense that my body was going numb as I was shivering intensely. I tried to get up, lost my balance and fell down followed by a seizure. The group and the leaders rushed me to the fire that was put out hours ago and covered my body with the warm ashes from the sacred fire. From a distance I could hear whispers not from our group but rather from outside or from elsewhere. I was surprised and shocked to see this scene as if I was watching myself and everything that was happening from above and all around, at the same time being aware of being in the middle of it. I could move fast not with my body but as energy. After I recovered we spent another night at our camp and left the following morning to our destination.
I always carry with me the essences of the pilgrimages I have done, and however challenging the journey was and continues to be, I am always learning. With the support of my tribal Elders I continue to carry the legacy that my sister Jaichima started sharing with me many years ago. My intention for the spiritual pilgrimages that I offer at Wirikuta Springs is to open you to the possibility of new horizons, reinforce your connection with your deepest strengths and understanding of yourselves, and to offer ceremonies that can nourish, heal, and clarify your sacred human design. And FYI, our journeys here in Cornville do not include being thrown into icy streams…

A note from Anaya:

We recently had a beautiful gathering with the people participating in Ron Young’s workshop at Mago Retreat in Sedona and we’re so grateful to have connected with them. Ron requested to bring the group to the Center so we welcomed over 80 people to do a ceremony here on the land around sunset. Afterwards we all squeezed onto the patio and enjoyed the full moon coming up, listened to Rutury share some stories about his culture, and expressed our heartfelt and deep thoughts and emotions with one another. It was a magical night and the land was happy to have so many feet walking on the ground! Beadwork and bags are making their way around the world and Rutury is on his way tomorrow to pass on the abundance of the group’s generosity to his community. The circle of blessings was felt by many people and will continue to be treasured for quite some time…Thanks to Ron Young for including Rutury and Indios Huichol in this very special pilgrimage.

The full moon rising on our ceremony with over 80 people at the Center; it was a very special evening! A huge thanks to Sarah for asking participants of the workshop to share this photo on our newsletter.

A note from Nahwi:

We wanted to share some of the photos that Anaya took at Wirikuta Springs…as you can see we have wonderful news! The pond is filling and the birds and deer are blessing it with their curiosity!

Thank you Kamu!

For those who do not know him, Kamu is my husband of 47 years. Thinking about keeping him…he is a hard worker, and I am rather fond of him.

I begin this newsletter with a recent conversation I had with one of the female Elders from my Wixarika tribe. I met this petite Elder about 3 years ago at one of our sacred gatherings in Mexico. Although we did not speak directly to each other, her presence and profound eyes gave me the sense of an assurance of something, I don't know how to explain it but felt that way. At the same time I felt a chill move throughout my body as if she was shifting or stirring something in me. While I kept focused on our gathering I was also admiring her beautiful outfit with gorgeous embroidery of all kinds of sacred designs and vivid colors.

In our circle there were twelve of us and she sat across from me, and while the rest of us talked she observed and scanned everything that was happening in that room. She had a sense of clarity with everything she did, occasionally looking inside of her Wixarika bags and getting something out of them to delicately put in her mouth. I thought to myself I know what that is, it’s plant medicine, and I wanted to ask her how long she'd been carrying it but never got the chance. She was in deep ceremony and not able to speak, and I did not want to disturb her. That was the last time we saw each other. Two weeks ago we spoke on the phone for the second time in the last three months and this is what she said.

“In the beginning of this year I was told by four Elders to reach out to you. I said to them I was going to but my busy schedule did not allow it to manifest until a few months ago. After having a sequence of lucid dreams with you and your parents I knew it was time to speak to you, and on this occasion I will share the last dream. Your mother and father were worried as you had not come home at the expected time. Dark had fallen and when your dog showed up without you, at that moment your mother got up and looked into the sky with open arms and said ‘I feel my baby is okay’. Your father was pacing back and forth trying to communicate by telepathy but was not getting any response. Somehow I travelled fast and knew where to look. You were sitting near a small river watching the water go by. Also you were talking to someone I knew and in the spot where you were both sitting it was clear daylight. I thought that was odd and strange, and as I continued to notice both of  your feet in the water I realized she was teaching you what she taught me many years ago. Rutury you were young about 4 or 5 years old, and your hair was long and tied-up with ribbons with many colors, I came closer and tapped you on the right shoulder. You didn’t respond because you were in deep ceremony with this person. I tapped you for the second time so hard that I almost threw you in the water. You resisted and told me,
‘ I know you have come for me as my parents are worried but as you can see I am in ceremony, please stop bothering me and go away.’ I felt disrespected by your demeanor and pushed the other person away from you, and at that moment she turned towards me as if wanting to strike me. I was very surprised to find out who this person was, it was ME. I thought there was no way I could be in two places, it was not possible. But as I thought more about it I realized, indeed I could be in two or four places all at the same time, after all I am the one who can take form to formless and be any place I choose to, not in the physical but rather in the spiritual realm.

After this dream I clearly understood that the time had come for me to pass on my skills of spirituality to you Rutury. It is very important to know that with everything in life we learn, we must also accept the consequences of the duality of what is sweet and bitter, and the pleasure and pain of healing and not healing. My teachings will take you into another dimension and prepare you to stand strong on the bridge you hold but it is not an easy path. This is serious and not a game to inflate your ego. Your authenticity is in ceremonies and people are looking for ways to connect with everything that is organic and holistic. Wirikuta Springs has that and much more. PamPaDios”

Even though it’s been a few weeks since we talked I can still hear and feel her encouragement. Without a question I am in a delicate state of mind, receiving and feeling her blessings is a gift of a life time.

Looking forward to our next ceremony

(In the July newsletter I mentioned it was 7 years ago that my sister passed away, and I was kindly corrected by some people and reminded that it was actually 6 years and not 7. Indeed they are right).

A note from Nahwi:

I have been doing a lot of work around my life and how events that forged my views on life have skewed me in so many ways.  As a child we blame ourselves and others for things that happen…both good and bad.   But as adults we really do need to step back and look at why we address happenings (past and present) in our lives the way we do.

I think I have made a step forward, in that after so many years of trying to figure out how to place the blame on the right person (me or others) I have come to the realization that I cannot make anyone else accept blame for their actions.  Only they can do that when they are ready and willing.  Just as only I can accept blame when I am open to receiving it, be that from another person or my own self.
Now, more to the point, what good does blame really do?  It does not fix a darn thing. The problem still exists and by placing it on another I have now made resolving it more difficult for myself.  It takes my pain and places it in the hands of another person.

When I see this I understand that only I can heal my pain…no matter who has caused it.  Sounds simple when I write it down, but we all know it is our life work to heal ourselves and it is hard, hard work.  But if I really want to move forward, if I really want to heal…I have to leave blame behind. By leaving blame behind, I will be freeing myself to care for myself.

WORKSHOP NOVEMBER 7th-11th
What’s In a Name?

We are all born into the world and receive a name. Maybe we were named after a family member or ancestor, a writer, a celebrity, a flower, a saint, a city, or we may have a unique name nobody has ever had before. Whatever our name is, it has a meaning and we have a relationship to it. We may love our name or have complex feelings about it, sometimes we change our name… Some of us received Huichol names over the many years Rutury and Jaichima were giving people their names in a special ceremony. Some of us have never received a Huichol name and may be curious or yearning to discover what it may be. Jaichima never gave people their names to bring them in to ‘the group’. It was not given to encourage people to feel a part of a spiritual community, rather it was given to deepen the person’s own understanding of their true selves, and it was always their choice how they wanted to integrate the gift they were given, the path and meaning of their Huichol name.

Indios Huichol will be hosting a workshop this November for participants to deepen their understanding and relationship with their given names. For people who have not received their Huichol names Rutury will be having a naming ceremony and they will be given their name! For those of us who have our Huichol names we will have an opportunity to explore our understanding and relationship with it. We will also explore our relationship to the names we were given at our birth. This will be an opportunity to work with our perceptions and understanding of ourselves, with our inner and outer masks, and to clarify how we perceive our sacred gifts and potential.

Participants will arrive after dinner on the evening of Wednesday November 7th, any time after 6:00pm. We will gather at 8:00pm and we request that all the participants be present at that time for our Ceremony to begin. The workshop will conclude on Sunday November 11th at noon and we will be closing the Center by 3:00pm.

Two full meals a day and abundant midday snacks will be provided and we will do our best to accommodate any special dietary needs or requests.

The $850 fee for the Workshop includes all meals and accommodations for 4 nights.

                                                                   Limited to 17 participants

Because of the nature of this ceremony and the preparations involved, Rutury will have to know who is attending at least two weeks prior to November 7th, by October 24th.

This is very important and we will not be able to accommodate people who want to attend with short notice. Please let us know NO LATER than October 24th if you want to attend this workshop.

A deposit of $250 is required to hold your reservation, with the remaining $600 due upon arrival at the Center. The deposit is only refundable until October 20th. More specific details will be sent to all of the participants prior to the workshop.

Please contact Nahwi at nahwi@earthlink.net if you are interested in attending or have any other questions.

Indios Huichol will continue its commitment to donating all of the profits from the workshop to the Huichol Community in Mexico.

We look forward to being with you!

A note from Rutury:

Que Tuma Aku. Greetings Dear Friends,

Tatewari Grandfather Spirit. We open our hearts to your healing which brings us wisdom and knowledge from all corners of the Universe.

It’s hard to believe that on July 17, 2018 it will be 7 years since my dear sister Jaichima passed away peacefully in her sweet home. I will never forget that particular moment and day, when she called my name with a firm and commanding voice to come and assist her. She was ready and I was not, and by the time I came and stood next to her sofa bed she was already in deep ceremonial prayer, her eyes were looking somewhere beyond to a place that could not be explained in words. Her delicate body was in a state of grace and peace. I joined her in prayer but I was also battling my own emotions because even though I knew she was entering into another realm, my desires were to keep her for a longer time in this life as we had more work to complete. I guess you could say I was selfish but there were also other reasons, and even though I knew what I was thinking could not stop something that happens naturally to all living beings, my mind continued to be relentless at the same time being focused on the profound nature of what was happening.

Jaichima paused her prayers to catch her breath and turned towards me to reach out and hold both of my hands. She was in silence and gave me the look that words were not to be spoken, however the moment she touched my hands I felt warm energy rushing throughout my body altering the flow of blood in my veins. I thought I had prepared for moments like this but never expected the magical happenings. I was amazed and mesmerized by her ability to have the strength as she proceeded to say,
“Rutury, we have travelled together to so many places, we have bridged many cultures, and overcame obstacles, and faced death. I want you to know your presence brought healing, harmony and balance in everything I went through, and when I hit lows and went deep into a dark hole where I felt alone and thought no one would miss me if I did not survive, you stood vigilant to help me when I needed help and you supported me with no judgement. When life rewarded us with good accomplishments we celebrated with a ceremony honoring each other for who we are, and for enhancing our sacred human design”.

Right at this moment my body and spirit was experiencing a life shifting change and I noticed I had been crying like a child all this time, and without interrupting the moment of flow I continued to hear my sister speak, “My dear Rutury, what I am saying is, my physical journey will be changing soon and where my spirit is headed to you cannot come. Stay here with my family and all my friends and I promise you I will be there with you, and no matter the circumstances keep the faith alive and keep on walking gently forward”.

And like an innocent child she fell asleep again. I stayed by her side holding her hands and noticed her breathing rapidly started to change. She would squeeze my hands tight and let go, like sensing the ocean for the first time, should I go deep or not, is it safe or unsafe… definitely she was the only one who knew what was becoming, and after a few minutes she let out a big sigh and tenderly I could feel her soul departing her body. I felt a ripping tear in my heart and at the same time I heard the beautiful sounds of a recording that Anaya brought of Tibetan Bowls throughout the house. I felt the presence of my Wixarika Elders and could see a trail of light sage smoke leading towards the entrance of the Tuki. I don't know exactly how long I was frozen, I know it was a while before I could gather myself to start to plan the required ceremonies for my sister.

Jaichima was my best and trusted friend, an impeccable teacher and down to earth sister, and she was the last member of my immediate family.

I miss my sister Jaichima like the night misses the stars on a cloudy night.

To everyone who receives this newsletter, thank you for taking the time to read my life journeys. They are delicate and personal, and in sharing them it is my wish to enhance and open your sacred human design to all possibilities.

A note from Nahwi:

As Human Beings we each have a different view of the world.  To a great extent that comes from our growing up in different environments or situations.  Even siblings growing up in the same family see things differently.  I remember a picture on my Grandmother’s wall.  I loved that picture. It was from an old magazine cover that my grandmother framed and hung on her dining room wall.  It was a snowy rural area and there was a Collie standing over a tiny lamb lying in the snow.  The Collie had her nose straight up in the air and she was howling or barking…I saw this as her calling her human to come get the lamb.

But my sister saw it as her mourning the death of the lamb. I still have that picture and I still feel hope in it.  Why did my sister and I see it in such extremely different ways?  Because as close as we are…because growing up in the same environment…we are still different Human Beings in every way possible.  That is how Human Beings are made.

We all individualize our experiences in a way that make sense of the world around us.  Our perceptions and feelings are our own.  Some people may have similar perceptions but they are never exactly the same.

This makes acceptance of others difficult at times, especially if we have decided someone else is wrong.  To have peaceful and constructive interactions with other Human Beings we need to find a way to understand where their perceptions and feelings are coming from…but how?  How do we do that?!

I think the first thing is to make an effort to not to assume you know them, their feelings or their convictions.    It is too easy, and too common to assume that they are being difficult, stubborn, unreasonable, or misinformed.   We get frustrated with people around us when they do not share our opinion or support us in our choices.   We tend to forget that what we consider important is not where their priority lies…because they have different experiences, different perspectives and therefore different priorities.

By reminding ourselves that everyone’s beliefs are a right, a fundamental right for all of us to determine our own paths…we go far in easing into a more balanced relationship. This allows us to hear more clearly where they are coming from.  This allows us both to have our own perceptions while acknowledging other’s perceptions.  We do not have to adopt their way of seeing…we just need to acknowledge it.  Who knows perhaps we will both end up sharing more than we thought was possible and hey…might just learn a thing or two about them and ourselves.

If we as individuals, groups or countries keep barriers up that keep us from connecting in a deeper more respectful way…we all lose.
