We open our hearts to your healing which brings us wisdom and knowledge from all corners of the Universe. About one week ago I had the opportunity to speak with someone from my Wixarika tribe. He spoke with me about a couple of issues that continue to threaten our communities as our lands are being taken over in many places by non-tribal people in Mexico. He wanted my advice on how to deal with the hostile confrontations they were having without escalating the conflicts. Our people are being murdered and abused, and even when the incidents are reported to the local authorities, nothing is resolved. The government officials in Mexico are notoriously corrupt and there are many Mexican people who still have racist beliefs about indigenous people. There are also others who support our rights and we do have lawyers working on our behalf but they face a serious challenge towards any justice in these cases. After I made a few suggestions and talked through some possible approaches to use he said that he wanted to share another story with me. He told me, “As you know Rutury Temay, about four years ago I became part of the Elder Circle to guard and protect the ancient traditions in our culture. Since that time I have traveled to many of our sacred sites and have found atrocities and disrespect. Perhaps people even came with good intentions but there was garbage, graffiti, and even human waste left behind. I feel sad that now these places need to be closed to keep people out, and we are only to be allowed in with the proper permit to be allowed to pray. When I heard that you were bringing people from the United States to meet some of us and to visit some of our sacred sites, I was very skeptical and was filled with mistrust. I was upset with you for bringing people to our culture and even spoke badly about you behind your back without your presence. I wondered why you were bringing people here and what your intention was, how could you trust people from another culture? Then a few days ago something interesting happened. I went to Santa Maria Del Oro, a sacred lake where we bring offerings and pray for our friends and family. After completing my prayers that evening I sat down near the edge of the lake contemplating the many times I had been there with my parents who have since made their transition. While deep in thought I began to sense a movement in the ground. At first I thought oh no! it is an earthquake! I realized there was no earthquake but in fact the water in the entire lake was moving and gaining momentum and from a distance I could hear and see people struggling in the middle of the lake. They were trying to get to the shore, it was late at night with no moon shining anywhere and all I could see were a couple of candle lights in the middle of the group of people in the water. I got up to see if I could help and then I saw that a boat showed up to rescue them. Once everyone was safe they started heading towards me and I was shocked to see that most of these people where from my tribe. There were five rescuers, four from the United States and one Mexican. At this moment I heard my name echoing out loud in the canyon and that’s when I came to my senses and wondered, what is this? Then I realized that I had a powerful vision. When I shared this vivid vision with the Elders they advised me to speak directly to you to be able to adjust my assumptions about you working with outside people and sharing our ways with them. At the same time I was reminded by the Elders that not all people are disrespectful and have bad intentions when they visit sacred areas. Sometimes the destroyers act that way because they are in pain themselves, physically and spiritually, and they need help. Upon hearing this my soul became tender and hopeful for the future and since that time my prayers go out to them. You see, I have seen many foreign people come and mimic our ways and declare they are being trained to be ‘Huichol Shamans’, which can never be done. They have people from our tribe who help them because they can support their families with the money they get paid. They tell them what they want to hear. Or foreigners come to be healed with our medicine and sometimes do not know how to do this respectfully. This has all been very damaging to us, the Elders find this to be very insulting and like a violation in the deepest ways. We do not trust these people, we are willing to help them with our healing ways but they take our ceremonies and perform them like a show to impress. Now I understand that you are not doing this Rutury Temay, that the people you bring come with respect and that they are not being taught by you to be like us but guided to be more themselves, using our ways to help them. I have been told this by our people but now my vision confirmed this to me. And I have also seen how the money that you donate to us has helped our community. Our tribe does not need to be saved by you or anyone else, but I saw in my vision that we can help each other in unconditional ways. Now Rutury Temay, tell everyone who came with you to Mexico and to our sacred sites that I send my humble gratitude and blessings to them and to their families. Their unconditional love and support is making a difference in our communities and we thank them.” It is hard for my people to trust foreigners because of what they have experienced and seen. They have also known great kindness and support from other organizations as well but they have also often been disappointed. These man’s words were good words for me to hear as Anaya and I are planning the Mexico workshops for 2019. We will be taking groups to Teotihuacan and to Wirikuta and we will let you know the details when they are confirmed. It is a delicate connection with the Wixarika people that we have started with our workshops and we look forward to building these relationships for years to come. I will be seeing some of you for our New Year gathering but I will not see a lot of you. I am letting you know that there will be a candle lit for you and your loved ones, along with my prayers for your well-being. That's how the light gets in.” Leonard Cohen Upcoming Events: 2019 New Year Ceremony Dec 30th to Jan 1st Indios Huichol would like to invite you to join us for our 2019 New Year’s Ceremony Sunday December 30th-Tuesday January 1st! We are continuing the tradition of gathering together with family and friends for this special time of welcoming in the New Year and reflecting on what our goals are for ourselves and for our community. We are offering this ceremony as our gift. It is an opportunity to be at the Center for those who may find it a challenge to be able to attend other workshops during the year, for people who have never been here and want to meet us and see the Center, as well as for others who regularly come to the Center for other events and ceremonies and who enjoy being with our community for this special gathering. The Center will be open on noon Sunday December 30th and our event will end by noon on January 1st. People will be responsible for accommodating their own food needs and usually groups form to help one another with the task of preparing food and cleaning up for a meal or two for all the participants. We will have sign up lists and encourage you to join a cooking and clean up team. These collaborations have managed to work beautifully in past years and no doubt they will again for this gathering as well. Rooms will be reserved on a first response basis and some solo people may be asked to share a double room if need be.
