A note from Rutury:
Que Tuma Aku. Greetings dear friends!!

In March of this year I had another opportunity to travel to Mexico and complete more ceremonies with my tribal people, the Wixarika Elders. As always, no matter how many times I have been with them, a nervousness began to make it difficult for me to feel focused and grounded, and that was also mixed with the thrill of excitement. I do not know until I see them how many Elders have traveled to bring their message to me, and how many of them will speak while the rest of them are still in their silent ceremony. Some of these messages can be translated by others but the most sacred messages can only be spoken by the source, and in this particular gathering in March there were two female Elders I had never met before. They traveled for many days and nights to see and hear for themselves if I still maintained and continue to carry the traditional ways without being manipulated by the materialistic system in the American culture that I am living in. They know of other traditional Mara-akames (traditional medicine people) who have ended up losing themselves for the sake of fame or to fit into the modern culture. It is sometimes hard to resist the comforts and conveniences of a more modern lifestyle, and still remain committed to the traditional ways that are a part of a medicine person’s path.
Our meeting began in the early morning, honoring each other with dignity and respect, followed by a prayer of gratitude. A gourd that contained water from seven springs was passed around for all of us to drink and the water tasted sweet, giving a comforting and soothing feeling on my palette. As I looked around there were eight Elders who traveled to be at this gathering. The two female Elders who I met for the first time begin to hum an ancient melody that brought all of us to tears, and after a few minutes they made a gesture for me to sit in the middle of their circle. I was aware of their words and prayers as I sat down, but in a matter of seconds I lost my awareness of the physical world. When I started to come back into this world it felt like I had lost all sense of time, I didn't remember much but I knew I had received a personal healing from the two female Elders. I was surprised by how I was struggling to regain all my senses after their healing, and at the same time it was understandable, they took me to another realm of consciousness. The two women begin to share their visions and messages while the rest of the Elders stood in silence in support of them.
This is what they said.

"Our world and everything living in it is going through a time of transition that is already, and will continue to be, very challenging. It is really important that the entire human tribe continue to stay strong and .focused on hope, and be open minded no matter what circumstances we find ourselves in. We the human tribe must do our part to encourage positive change in the midst of what might feel like chaos. Changes need to begin internally in us, we need to clear the clutter and make room for what is essential in ourselves and in our homes. When we make changes be aware that it may feel harder to adapt to new places but eventually all will be okay. Take for instance the wild deer that used to roam near our river and mountains. We had to move them away from their usual comfort zone because their daily food was harder for them to find, so collectively we moved them to higher grounds and a new area. Every time we moved them early in the day, by the afternoon all the deer moved back to their familiar grounds. They did this numerous times, and we moved them each time back to a new area. Eventually they understood we were working together to try to help them. The deer and the people helped each other learn how to recognize the need for new surroundings and how to adapt to them. Sometimes we need change and we need to evolve. By moving to a new place in ourselves and/or in our environment, we shift the old energy into new energy. Sometimes we have to this more than once, but eventually we will find comfort in the new place. It is hard to break the habits of what we are accustomed to, but new places will eventually feel familiar and benefit us as individuals and as a community."

Looking forward to our next ceremony,
Love and blessings
Rutury

A note from Nahwi:
New Beginnings
Every single day we have the opportunity to look at it with fresh innocent eyes.  But so often we wake to a long list in our heads and we stumble out of bed and start a routine of doing.  Making the bed, starting the coffee, feeding family members (two legged and 4 legged) answering questions, barking out orders; like “pick that up, put that down, eat your breakfast, stop hitting you little brother” and so on and so on. We all have that old record (oops, showing my age) recording going on in our heads.  So often I felt more like a robot than a human being. It would even be running as I was driving to work.  Not being in the now is so dangerous to our physical self as well as our physiological self and our sacred self.
I had mentioned in the last newsletter about Personal Ceremony.  Well I guess I am harping on it now.  I have been rather sick this last month, a very severe and long bout of Vertigo.  It is something I do not have to deal with very often, thank heavens. But when it hits I am close to incapacitated.  Daily activity is curtailed in so many strange ways.  So the reason I am mentioning this is that I was forced to change my everyday life.  And I am actually very grateful for that.   I was pretty pissed that I could not knit… if you know me, you know that is a huge part of my being.  Yet even that ended up being something I am grateful for.
Sometimes we have to be stripped of our routines to show us that we do not have to fill every moment with activity.  During this time I was able to do my personal ceremonies with a clearer (but dizzy) head, and a much clearer heart and soul.  I had been in my head way too much and not listening to my heart or my soul.
This all became much clearer to me this morning when I was doing my Ceremony.  My clarity with the prayers I was saying and experiencing was so different than a month ago.  I was able to really watch this day begin with the eyes of a child. I was excited because only I can make the day new for myself.  I want you to really hear that.   I AM EXCITED BECAUSE ONLY I CAN MAKE THE DAY NEW FOR MYSELF.  Stopping the mind chatter, making a space for me to touch the sacred before I speak to anyone…..Holy Freakin’ Cow!  I would have never been able to come to this place if I had not been forced by my body into a personal retreat within myself.  And I am so grateful.

We had a beautiful and moving week in Mexico and Rutury is appreciating the way the participants embraced the Wixarika people, the sacred places, and the deep process we all experienced in this special workshop. He hopes that the participants will continue to remember and cultivate the connections they made in Mexico, in themselves, and with each other. He encourages you to continue to honor your innocence and keep in mind the ceremonies that we shared. They were an opportunity for you to renew your intentions, further your healing, and fine tune your awareness with the support of the Elders and with Rutury. News from the tribal people who met our group is that they are feeling very joyful and appreciative of our respect for their art, their ceremonies, and their customs. They feel very connected to us and were happy to experience our unconditional support and love.

Thank you for sharing your generosity of spirit,
Anaya
