Greetings Dear Friends... Tatewari, Grandfather Spirit. We open our hearts to your healing which brings us wisdom and knowledge from all corners of the Universe. Before moving to Wirikuta Springs I lived in Phoenix with my sister Jaichima where she owned a house in the north part of the city. In the early 80s we started to build in her back yard a Shrine called a Tuki made of adobe and stones, a sacred place to pray and meditate. Seven years later it was completed by Ulutemay and my mother, and that night we all stayed up chanting and praying. It was a tender time as we synchronized the front door of the Tuki with the stars above us, and the floor, roof, walls, and four corners had to be aligned with the four elements. In the Wixarika culture a Tuki is not only a shelter and a place to pray, it is the link or the hub that keeps everything functioning and connected from the ancient to the modern times. A change came when my sister passed away and I had to vacate her house due to extreme pressure by her kids. Dismantling a sacred Tuki has never been done in our Wixarika culture, but with the guidance of the Elders of my tribe I started to take it apart piece by piece and layer by layer. It took a few weeks until I got to the last adobe piece and it was time to prepare for the last fire ceremony at Jaichima’s house. I stayed vigilant all night chanting and praying until sunrise, and in a delicate way I gathered the ashes of the fire ceremony and saved it to be spread all over the land of Wirikuta Springs. When the moment arrived for my departure it became difficult to say goodbye to that house on Paradise Drive. Vivid memories of my father and Jaichima doing ceremonies in the sacred Tuki poured through me. Luckily I had the help of friends; people who felt like a family to me were there to help unconditionally as they understood my delicate situation. My sincerest gratitude goes out to each one of them. Now I live at Wirikuta Springs, the land that came in a dream to my father Hakaula, when he and Jaichima were on a vision quest in the Sedona area in the early 70s. Since I arrived to this land there is not a day or night that goes by without my ceremonies. I am on a spiritual journey as I walk the land listening and looking for any clue or sign that would lead me to where the sacred Tuki will have its new home. Many of you know that Wirikuta Springs has special spots, like the spiral, the sanctuary path, the ponds, the fire circle, the sound of spring water and the Spirit Tree. Speaking of the Spirit Tree, a few nights ago I was doing a ceremony under the tree, it was late night around 10pm and it was windy because I kept relighting my candle over and over and I was getting annoyed. All of sudden I felt something behind my back like animals with four legs, immediately I wanted to turn and see what kind of animals were there but something told me not to, so I continued to light my candle and pray. In the midst of this I could hear they were sniffing and sneezing. I sensed there were about 5 or 6 of them. Was that real? Was it my imagination? Could it have been spirits of animals? Whatever they were I am happy they came to take care of something on the land, to honor the moment with their presence. PamPaDios Looking forward to our next ceremony Love and Blessings A note from Nahwi: Holding on to our garbage With all the books, lectures and seminars on the power of positive thinking I see more and more people stuffing their anger, disdain, pain, hurt and any generally considered bad/negative feelings inside themselves. I have found myself it doing more than I want to admit. When we hold these things inside ourselves and pretend that they don’t exist they never go away…they fester like an infection and at some point in time they will come out with little warning. For me, that is a flash of anger so intense that it scares me…because I pretend I am a calm controlled fun loving person, and I have pretended that so well I started to believe it. I know I am not alone with this, it may not be anger you experience it could be sadness, depression or something else. Jaichima use to tell me (and many others) that I was saving my queeta so I could use it later. What she meant by the term “queeta” is crap… and she felt I was tucking it away with all my other old crap in my life to use as one would use as a rock in a fight…I had forgotten that until recently when I had a flash point with my anger and was yelling about some stupid thing in the house that was not where is should be. I turned and saw Chica (my dog) cowering…this innocent sweet soul that loves me no matter what was being traumatized, by me. I was stuffing my crap back inside of myself because I was too “busy” to take the time to experience my feelings, be they good or bad, and I exploded. Now Chica was suffering because I wasn’t taking the time to do my work on myself & I was suffering because I wasn’t taking the time to do my work on myself. By allowing myself to observe my feelings as they drift in me and not locking on to them helps, and if I find one to be demanding my attention more aggressively I have been going back to what Jaichima and Rutury did with workshop participants…the “arrows”. We would hunt emotions and when our arrow hit an emotion we would spend time thinking, mediating and examining both the positive part of that emotion and the negative part of it. By “knowing” the full emotion we experience…there was no reason to hide any of it inside of us. The emotions become something we have no reason to be embarrassed about, ashamed of, or alarmed about. It simply moves though us, we don’t need to react, we don’t need to attach…just acknowledge what it actually is…the full emotion! And yes, I have apologized to Chica and we had a good cuddle, and I am back on track with my personal work on myself. Greetings Dear Friends... Tatewari, Grandfather Spirit. We open our hearts to your healing which brings us wisdom and knowledge from all corners of the Universe. Last month in April I had another opportunity to be in ceremony in Guadalupe, Arizona with people from the Yaqui and Seri tribes. They have been doing these ceremonies for centuries, usually before or around Easter weekend. My connection with them dates back many years when my father Hakaula and my sister Jaichima would be guests of honor and I would accompany them. Many years have gone by since that time but these private ceremonies have not changed. They continue to be exclusive and outside people are only included by special invitation, but once these private ceremonies are complete then the public is invited to join. As I mentioned, I have been doing ceremonies with them for over 40 years, yet every time I receive their special invitation it is humbling. These kinds of ceremonies are not like others when we acknowledge great achievements in life or academic accomplishments; they are ceremonies for our Earth and the Elements. We believe our prayers, chants and offerings are like when a mother or grandmother whispers a sacred melody to calm a child and encourage a relaxed state of mind and being. When the Sacred Deer Dance is performed, every step and body movement tells a story of how wounded our world is and everything in it and what the deer goes through is a metaphor for all of us. At the end of the dance the deer looks for a familiar place to rest and fall asleep, awakening again for another cycle of life. The Sacred Deer Dance is performed once a year. In this year’s gathering there were three traditional medicine people who were invited for the first time by the Yaqui tribe. A woman representative from each of the Navajo, Pima, and Tarahumara tribes were invited, and they were three women with very profound perspectives carrying great respect for their families and communities. Being with them was an honor and I felt the essence and depth of their pride and their humbleness. The Tarahumara woman spoke only the ancient language of her people so she brought her granddaughter to interpret for her. We all gathered in a room in an old church made of adobe blocks. The inside floor was covered with wildflowers and herbs, and along the walls were hundreds and hundreds of candles that were lit during the private ceremonies. We sat down on the floor and before our ceremony began each one of us introduced ourselves with a short statement about which tribe we were there to represent. I was not really surprised but more marveled at how these three women never met each other before but their gifts and messages were similar and seemed to be synchronized and in harmony. They began to share their message one after another, and the essence of what they all said was as follows- We thank you for inviting us and with great respect have traveled to join you in this sacred ceremony. We too feel the urgency to protect our Elements as without them we cannot exist. Our grandfathers would tell a story of a time when our world would die if the human tribe would not live in harmony with Nature, giving a ripple effect to everything that is alive. Now it is no longer just a story. We are living the story. Therefore we the human tribe must come together to exceed our potential, not to overpower one another but rather to help and make our positive contributions, setting an example for the future generations. Our prayers and ceremonies are the seeds that are germinating in our Mother Earth. What are your seeds for the future? I came away from this ceremony with a deep sense of gratitude for having been born into the Wixarika culture, where from an infant you are taught to respect our Mother Earth and all the Elements. PamPaDios Looking forward to our next ceremony Love and Blessings Rutury A note from Nahwi: Gratitude I recently read an article talking about cultivating more gratitude in one’s self. And it rubbed me the wrong way. The piece was based on comparing yourself and your life against others. What?! I understand comparisons are often used, but how is that really getting you in touch with your true gratefulness. One can always find others who are richer, poorer, more educated, less educated, and healthier or more infirmed… and on, and on… but how is that turning inside to see and know yourself? I find that true gratitude can be achieved by sitting quietly in meditation, little flashes of good and bad scamper around in my head along with my grocery list and who I need to call later. When I am able to just view them passing without judgement or attachment I open myself to “seeing with different eyes”, as Jaichima and Rutury have both taught many of us. Then it is easier to be grateful for a breeze that touches me, or hearing the song of a hummingbird staking his territory. A smile from a stranger that was in response to the smile I was not aware I was wearing. Slowing down and being present is a way to experience true gratitude that does not use comparisons. What I am experiencing and feeling is my own awakening. Real Gratitude is a sense of well being because you see yourself as a part of the web of life and spirit. Not that you have more stuff than the guy down the road. PamPa’Dios Nahwi A note from Anaya: We want to thank all the people who came to join us for our Earth Day Ceremony weekend work party at Wirikuta Springs. Your generosity of spirit and hard work was truly inspiring! Dead trees were cut down and cut up, stubborn weeds were cleared, the pond by the Pueblo House was uncovered and rediscovered, plants were potted, the chipper was in full force, and there were delicious meals shared in between all the sweeping and trimming and clearing! The land was buzzing with the energy of the young and not so young ones, and everyone’s efforts contributed to what was a very productive and heartfelt gathering. It was also wonderful to be in ceremony together. The land looks and feels refreshed and cared for and we are so grateful for your support. Rutury, Anaya, and Nahwi What a hard working group! Thank you again! Here is the pond that is near the Pueblo House! What an amazing change! Greetings Dear Friends, Tatewari, Grandfather Spirit. We open our hearts to your healing which brings us wisdom and knowledge from all corners of the Universe. In mid March, I had a profound lucid dream featuring my sister Jaichima, who many of you know passed away almost 6 years ago. My first thought was to keep the dream to myself as it felt very personal, but as soon as I thought of that more dreams followed where Jaichima was indicating to me in more than one way that the dream was intended for everyone we know, as well as for those who had never met her. She continues to work with all of them by their side. This is the dream: Jaichima and I were walking towards an enormous round tower which had beautiful stained glass windows and some parts of the building were left open where the wind was flowing in and out. Before we entered into the building we were greeted by two females who walked with us for a short distance, and then Jaichima was asked by both of them to whisper a code word that only she knew into a hole in the wall of the building. The elongated door opened and once we stepped inside we saw a floor above us, and below us there was another huge area that looked like a forest with trees, gardens, vegetables and well maintained paths. Jaichima pulled me towards the windows so I could see the beautiful landscape everywhere all around us, inside and out. Then I started to feel fear as I sensed the building was gently moving sideways. I was feeling like an earthquake was coming but I continued to stay focused and present with my sister. We walked a short distance and entered into a room where the only lights were candles. I looked to my left and saw people sitting on the floor in a meditation position and all of them were wearing maroon and yellow robes. I assumed they were monks. To my right there was another group of people gathering who were wearing simple white clothes. They were protecting someone special in the middle of the group and I saw that it was Gandhi. He seemed to know Jaichima and said hello as we passed by. We continued to walk down a long corridor that eventually ended at a round door. We entered a room where there was a gathering of people from all over the world. There were young people and elders, males and females, and some of the people were wearing traditional and ceremonial outfits appearing to represent their tribes and communities. Among this crowd I also saw many people we had worked with and had known during the almost 40 years Jaichima and I worked together doing individual sessions and workshops. Jaichima reminded me to pay attention to the fact that every time we went through a door or entered a space the door not only remained open but seemed to disappear, leaving one room open after another. Then Jaichima and I started looking for our assigned seats in the crowded room. She told me that they had our names on them, and when we finally found our seats and were about to sit down, an usher out of nowhere appeared and said to us “Where have you been? People are waiting for you guys”. Apparently we were to perform a ceremony, which I did not know about and had not prepared for, and as always Jaichima and I were running late! I turned to my sister and said, “Are we ever going to be on time one of these days?” With a sweet smile she whispered into my ear and told me “All will be okay Rutury”. My sister and I walked up to the stage and she began by sharing messages from our tribe. After about one hour of talking she started to pray and invited all the participants to come closer to her so she could bless them. Out of thin air manifested seeds and she put them into each person’s hands. Some participants did not know what to do with these seeds and others held them as if they were precious gems. When she completed her ceremony she said to everyone “My seeds are now your seeds. Do what you want to do with them”. She came off the stage and came down to the floor and started dancing with everyone in the crowd, inviting them to join her in celebration of new beginnings. Most of them were joining in, and people who were there for the first time and had never met her were deeply moved by Jaichima’s unconditional love as they began to dance with her. Right at that moment I heard a loud noise and I woke up. I checked my phone and it was exactly 3:17 am. I was reminded that Jaichima’s birthday was March 17th … PamPaDios Looking forward to our next ceremony Love and Blessings Rutury A note from Nahwi: Spring…Rebirth…Coming out of the darkness All of these things, and more, are a part of this new season. In so many cultures and so many religions it is a sacred reminder to us all that there is life and there is joy in life if we take the time to pause and see, smell, taste and enjoy it. Even in Arizona it is an awaking of the soul and the soil. I have some quotes that resonate in me and I hope you don’t mind if I share them with you to celebrate this miracle of Spring. From “The stony Garden by Theodore Roethke “Deep in their roots, all flowers keep the light.” From The Exclamation Mark by Anton Chekhov “The snow has not yet left the earth, but spring is already asking to enter your heart. If you ever recovered from a serious illness, you will be familiar with the blessed state when you are in a delicious state of anticipation and are liable to smile without any obvious reason. Evidently that is what nature is experiencing just now.” These quotes came from a newsletter I receive from The Joseph Campbell Foundation, “ Mythblast” This article was written by Bradley Olson Ph.D This is a time of new beginnings and growth, and I for one plan to participate in that! Upcoming Events: We’re looking forward to hosting the Earth Day Weekend Work Party and Ceremony on April 20th-23rd! Greetings Dear Friends, Tatewari, Grandfather Spirit We open our hearts to your healing which brings us wisdom and knowledge from all corners of the universe. About 3 weeks ago I had another opportunity to meet with two female Elders from my tribe. Along with them came three assistants who spoke fluent Spanish, and after we greeted each other in a ceremonial way the two female Elders began expressing their concerns and messages. They said “Before we begin with our ceremony, it is important for us to de-clutter the ill energy that was casted on us on this journey”, and at that moment I had no idea of what they had gone through but soon I was to find out. Both female Elders began to talk without interrupting each other and proceeded to explain, “We walked nights and days, crossed mountains and rivers, and along the way encountered obstacles with people who were different than us. On one occasion the five of us were forced to move from our seats on a bus and repeatedly were told ‘you drunken Indians do not belong in this bus’. Witnessing that type of energy we thought that in fact he must have been be drunk to behave in such a way. In this experience we witnessed a few things about human nature. For instance, there was a couple in the crowd on the bus, a female and male well dressed and with good manners, who spoke to their people without anger and shame and said, ‘just because they look and dress differently than we do does not give us permission to use inappropriate words with them. They are people with feelings like you and I, and why are they being moved from their seats when they have assigned tickets?’ At that moment we witnessed this couple step forward not to humiliate, but to bring equality for all humanity. They were not showing off or using their position in their society, and despite the bad looks they received from their friends, they demonstrated how we all belong in this world and how all of us have a choice to help one another or not. There were many moments that we all felt it would be easier for us to gather our things and return home, but what kept us focused and calm was hearing the rain and thunder through the bus windows as we tried to rest for the night. This kind of energy does not belong to any of us and we need to take care of it before our next ceremony. “ After taking care of that ceremony one of the female Elders said, “Rutury, despite the moments of fear on this journey I am extremely happy to see you here at what is called the border”. I smiled back at her, saying the feeling was mutual. Out of her ceremonial bag she took out a small gourd that contained spring water from one of the sacred sites in our village, and with candles lit around us the two Elders began to pray, chant and bless me. Then the rest of the spring water was poured into another small sacred gourd and looking into the water the two female Elders began interpreting what they were seeing. Day after day our world continues to get weaker and weaker and is asking from all of us to not give up on the improvements we do on ourselves. In turn we can do that to our world. Our elements are being reactive, just look at what no rain and excessive rain has done in some parts of our world, and how the fires have burned majestic hills and demolished to ashes beautiful homes. All of us, including all the creatures that live in our world, are being affected and reactive by the outcome of what is happening in our world. We must resist and not participate in any type of violence and hate, instead let us use our powers and unconditional support to bring us together and stop the momentum of divisiveness.” Before we all left our room the two Elder females did another healing blessing ceremony on me and said, “Our dearest Ruturytemay, we are aware of what is happening around you, and being a bridge between two cultures is challenging. The bridge is delicate and has to endure all kinds of weather. Continue to be on your path and be vigilant of your surroundings, and we will always be with you to support your spiritual work.” Spending that time with them was magical, and their blessings and the words of the two female Elders continue to permeate my heart. PamPaDios Looking forward to our next ceremony Love and Blessings Rutury A note from Indios Huichol: Recently we became aware that there has been a rumor going around with the mistaken idea that we will no longer be open and available as a Retreat Center and that Indios Huichol will be dissolving. We don’t know how this idea started since it has no basis in our reality, and could not be further from the truth, so we want to clarify to you our current intentions and progress and hope this will clear up the issue for some people who have contacted us with their concerns. We realize that because the Center has seemed to be ‘closed’ for some time this may have caused some confusion. So to begin, first is an explanation of our process and progress with the Center over the last couple of years. For a few years after Jaichima’s death the property was unattended until the issues regarding her estate and the fate of the Center were resolved. The four buildings that were already in deep disrepair became unsafe and unusable, with the main house sadly having to be a total tear down because of mold. All of the other buildings also needed a complete renovation in every way. New electric, heating and cooling, plumbing, roofs and gutters, walls, insulation, ceilings, windows and doors, paint…not to mention larger issues of infrastructure on the whole property. Imagine having to completely renovate every aspect of your own house and then multiply that by four! It has been an absolutely monumental task, we have been working very, very hard for the last few years to complete the renovations, and we are very happy that we are now so close to being done. We still have a few bathrooms to renovate and a lot of finishing work to do, stucco, paint, a few more windows, etc..the plumbing in the Pima House failed when there was a group here a few months ago, which was a real bummer, major unanticipated fix there… It seems that everything in all the buildings just gave up and we truly needed new beginnings all around. The pond was leaking water and was overrun with cattails, it was drained and cleared and never was able to hold water when we tried to fill it back up. As many of you know, it is like the heart of the Center, and in many ways it has felt like the Center was heartbroken and needed a lot of attention, hard work, and healing to feel whole again, on many levels. Jaichima imagined years ago that the underground cement pipe of water which fed the pond from the spring would be liberated and made into an above ground spring, which we have finally done. Kamu helped us create an absolutely beautiful stone lined stream, it is a wonderful improvement and we are so grateful to him for all of his work. The pond is now going to be refilled after we finally sorted out how to deal with the leaks, the heart of the Center will be coming alive again, just as all the buildings are also very close to being fully functional. Although we have hosted a few groups here the last year we have not felt ready to offer the facilities to the public as yet. We kept thinking along the way that we were closer to completion than we actually were, unfortunately we kept finding more major issues to deal with. The list was neverending and the renovations took much longer than we ever anticipated as they ended up being much more extensive than we ever imagined. Now we truly are a few months away from completion, finally! We feel strongly that we need to have an accessible accommodation available for people with disabilities and so we are in the process of building an accessible casita (a ‘glamping’ cabin) near the Pueblo House. This is something that Wirikuta Springs needed to be able to offer, as it has not been able to do before. We expect the casita will be finished by the summer! We know some of you miss the Center and are concerned about its current state and where it is heading in the future. We are so happy to be able to share that the future of the Center could not be more exciting and hopeful, it is poised to be ready to welcome you all back, as well as get to know all the people who have yet to experience what a special and sacred place it is. Another important point we feel we must also clarify is that donations made to Indios Huichol were never used for any of the renovations. The donations continue to support the Wixarika Elders and will always remain allocated and dedicated to them. More good news is that Rutury will be leading both weeklong and weekend workshops here this year and we will be scheduling them soon. We have an Earth Day gathering coming up which is explained in more detail in this newsletter. We will also be offering Wirikuta Springs Retreat Center to other groups and individuals who want to do retreats and/or workshops on the land. Over the last few years we managed the renovations to accommodate times when the local indigenous community could come to the land to do their ceremonies, as they have always done and will continue to do so. We have also had a few gatherings and workshops here and people have been very understanding of our ‘work in progress’ as yet to be finished, which we have appreciated very much. Indios Huichol remains an ongoing non-profit dedicated to helping the Elders of the Wixarika (Huichol) Community. Rutury is in regular contact with his people and they rely on his guidance and on his support, as he also does with them. This commitment to being the ‘bridge’ will continue to remain his purpose and path. So for those of you who have voiced their concerns to us, please be assured that although things have seemed to be quiet around here lately we have in fact been in a full on state of as noisy as can be high gear for the last few years, preparing to welcome you with a fully functioning facility! We are looking forward to seeing you! As always, please feel free to be in touch with any questions you might have. Indios Huichol Rutury, Anaya, and Nahwi Stream emerges from the land heading towards the pond Closeup shot of the stone carving by Kamu A note from Anaya: We have been very fortunate to be sharing the land for the last few months with two very special people, Alicia and Paige. They have helped the Center in so many ways, with building, clearing, painting, and all around inspiring collaboration. We will be sad to see them leave us this month but wish them well on their journey to Vermont where they will interning at Yestermorrow, they are lucky to have them! Thank you for all of your heartfelt and hard work. We will miss you. We've been doing a massive clean up on the land of old wood, fencing, rotten stumps, etc. and we greeted the sunrise with a huge bonfire at the bottom of the now empty but soon to be filled back up pond. We are so grateful to Alicia, Paige, and Rutzy for helping clear the pond and prepare the pile of wood for the fire. Alicia and Paige started the fire by using a spindle and friction, it was a beautiful ceremony! It’s amazing to have seen such a delicate spark turn into the biggest bonfire; it was a powerful thing to witness. What a cleansing fire! Upcoming Events: EARTH DAY CEREMONY AND GATHERING |
