Every time I walk into the forest I am reminded of my grandfather who used to say “Look at the beautiful forest that for so many centuries has been the habitat of all kinds of creatures, teaching us to get along with one another and modeling how to co-exist despite having many differences. Next time you are in the forest whether it is at night or in the day, walk carefully and listen, you will hear the forest humming and sometimes it will speak not in words but in beauty. Just look at the trees, mountains, rivers, and feel the fresh air that all of us need. We the human tribe must never forget to take care of our forest, as our forest depends on us”. That kind of a message I carry to the present day and share it with all who come for a session or when we come together for a deeper ceremony. For example like the ceremony we just had in Sebastopol California where we honored our dear beloved teacher Jaichima. We also aligned ourselves with the 4 elements as the Wixarika Elders of my village were synchronizing their prayers and chants with ours. The ocean ceremony and fire watch continues to flow all the way to my village. What a magnificent and incredible ceremony we all experienced together. Do you remember what you wrote on a piece of paper with the element you chose, and also your string? Well, I just wanted to let all of you know that your string is on the way to my village where it will be blessed and then sent back to me where I will do another ceremony. Then it will be part of the decoration on the Spirit Tree at Wirikuta Springs. I also want to thank the people who joined us on Sunday for lunch; it was wonderful to see you. For those of you who were not able to be with us for our ceremony in Sebastopol, please know that you can always reach out to me for sessions, join me when we do other ceremonies in other locations, or at Wirikuta Springs when the Center will be ready to welcome guests by the end of the year. As I mentioned in previous newsletters, the ceremonies I bring forward are never to impress, or for the Wixarika Elders to become famous or known. We do our ceremonies for our environment and the human tribe which I am deeply devoted to. Looking forward to being with all of you again, Pam Pa Dios Rutury A note from Indios Huichol We want to thank everyone who was at the July Sebastopol Ceremony for making it such a special weekend! The food was wonderful and everyone cooperated and worked together so beautifully. We have two important announcements. GOOD NEWS! WE ARE EXCITED ABOUT THE OPENING OF WIRIKUTA SPRINGS RETREAT CENTER! Rutury has decided to have the next New Year’s Ceremony at the Center! We are so happy to be able to host this wonderful ceremony and also celebrate the re-opening of Wirikuta Springs Retreat Center. It’s been a long time since we have been able to gather at the Center, and we are happy to be able to officially re-open the Center facilities at the New Year. Truly a time for new beginnings... Here is the schedule for the weekend- Participants are welcome to arrive any time after noon on Friday December 30th. There will be an opening celebration party on Friday December 30th from 3:00pm to 7:00pm and we will be providing food and refreshments. We will then gather the New Year’s participants at 7:30 and begin our ceremony which will end on Sunday January 1st. at noon. We hope you will consider joining us for this very special event! It has been many years since we were able to gather at the Center and the land misses your presence. This will be a joyous occasion and a wonderful way to greet the New Year. People are welcome to stay an additional night at the Center on Sunday for an additional $50 fee. The Center will be closed on Monday at noon. Please email Nahwi and let her know if you are planning on attending. The fee for the New Year’s Ceremony weekend is $250. Fee is due no later than December 20th. We will have more details for this Workshop as we get closer to it. Now some disappointing news, alas... We need to tell you about a change we have to make regarding the weekend workshop we wanted to host on October 21st-23rd. A few days ago we had an inspection of the Pueblo House and unfortunately we discovered that there was mold in the building which needs to be dealt with before we can have anyone stay in the building. We are concerned about everyone’s health, and because we now need to do more repairs than we had previously expected, we have come to the sad conclusion that the October weekend has to be cancelled. We cannot be sure the repairs can be done in time, with all the other construction on the main house that still needs to be completed. We will of course refund your fee for the October workshop, unless you want to apply it for the New Year Ceremony. Please let us know how you would like us to handle it. We hope this does not inconvenience anyone who made plans to be here in October. If you have already booked a plane ticket please contact Nahwi and we will try our best to help you with your flight details. We are so sorry that we had to make the decision to postpone this workshop. We don’t anticipate we will have to do this again since all of the buildings should be in great shape by the time we officially open in December. All in all, it is a very exciting time for the Center and for Indios Huichol. We have made major progress towards realizing Jaichima’s dream of renovating the Center to be able to host people in a safe, updated and welcoming environment. The repairs and renovation of the property ended up being way beyond what anyone imagined and continues to be a challenge! That being said, the re-opening is clearly in sight and next year we plan on offering a number of workshops as well as making the Center available to appropriate groups for private ceremonies . Rutury is still being guided by the Elders of his community and encouraged to keep reaching out to people and expanding what he is sharing. 2017 will be a year of many new beginnings for Wirikuta Springs. We are looking forward to sharing the land with all of those who have known it so well over the years, and those of you who will be visiting for the first time. Pam Pa Dios, Indios Huichol A note from Anaya: Your donations at work! We wanted those of you who are donating funds to Indios Huichol to know that Rutury is on his way to Mexico next week with funds, fabric, and beads for the people in his tribe. The materials that he brings them are appreciated more than you can imagine. It makes a huge difference in their lives, and it boosts their spirits in profound ways to know that people they have never met are contributing the funds towards making this possible. Many of his tribal people really struggle to be able to support their families and the funds and materials we regularly donate to the community help ease the financial responsibilities they have, especially for the Elders and their assistants. Our donations make it easier for them to continue to do the ceremonies that are so important for their people, for all of us in the Indios Huichol community, for the Human Tribe, and for our Earth and environment. We want to make it clear that your donations, all the profits from the workshops, and all the profits from the sale of the artwork we have at events and on our website go directly to support the Wixarika tribe. This has been the mission and commitment of Indios Huichol, something Jaichima started many years ago. Rutury is continuing to fulfill this commitment and your contributions to this effort are invaluable. A note from Nahwi: What an amazing workshop! The Workshop Honoring the 4th Year of Jaichima’s passing was over the top amazing! 4 people were assigned to blow Conch Shells at the Ocean Ceremony. I am sorry to admit this, but I was really wondering if that was going to work! They practiced the day before on the beautiful property we were staying. And it kinda sounded like a farting contest. But when we were at the ocean and Honoring Jaichima, the Elders, the Ocean and yes, ourselves, it was one of those moments that sound changes everything, it lifts you to a different place. It was harmonic, enchanting, powerful, and I don’t want to sound like I am way out there, but life changing. The sound of the Conch Shells, the ocean’s own music, our drums and Kaichas (rattles)…it felt like a spiral of prayers and spirit. What was amazing was that the Conch Players kept it up for at least 20 solid minutes! Talk about an elevated space! Even though it was a public beach people never bothered or interfered with us and our Ceremony. I am still carrying the salt air, the sound of Conchs, drums and Kaichas in the cells of my body. The connection with each other, the ocean, the Elders and Jaichima is as much a part of my physical make up as the nose on my face. What can I say? WOW! Ceremony Rocks! Indios Huichol Inc.
